Blame it on Endhiran..(or may be not). Here is a quirky attempt. No idea what triggered this piece. But I really wanted to finish the composition given that I haven’t really done anything in the last couple of months. There are at least half a dozen ideas sitting idle in my studio..

Do it

Here is another experimental piece…

Calling it “Do it” as the thought that inspired me to do this was sort of a transgression from some serious contemplation to optimism.

As usual, comments and criticism are welcome.

Nuvvu Lekunda… (Without you…)

As I sat down in my studio yesterday, something happened and the result is this number. As I started playing with the first few notes, I had an image of this person, whom I had never met but had been reading about quite a bit of late. The girl in my image is/was a family member of a couple of my good friends. All but 22, she passed away a week ago in a road accident, hardly 4 months after she landed in the US for her Master’s. Of course, I had no idea about what kind of person she was till I heard from my friends as they grieved their loss. Just made me realize (again) that nothing can be taken for granted in life. This number is called “Nuvvu Lekunda” (Telugu for “Without you”..). May her family find the strength to get over this tragic loss.

Turncoat Thillana

May be I am on a musical overdrive. But what the heck!

After some exchanges on Mohana Kalyani with one of my cousins recently, my interest to do another classical raga interpretation got reignited. (I had done a Bhoopalam based piece earlier).

With no real idea except the basic goal of understanding & experimenting with the raga, I started fooling around in my studio. Initially some ‘Jathis’ were added. But later I thought unless I am able to do a whole hearted attempt on Jathis, of which I am no expert on, it is better to pull that out.

So, what I got after 4 hours was a piece which is heavily based on my interpretation of Mohana Kalyani in a Thillana style improvised by me. Calling it “Turncoat Thillana” for the slightly naughty liberty that I took.

Ini Varum (இனி வரும்)

Here is a short number, fresh out of my studio and something I finished it in one evening! I enjoyed doing this for sure.

Staying up High

Here is an attempt to do something different.  I will try to write about what inspired me to write this song under the Musical Jive page, one of these days.

Lyrics:

Cracking at the Dawn..

The daylight that’s gone.

Walking down the Lane (Felt a)

Tingling on my Cane…

Pitching for a Drop shot,

Forking up the Dollar…

Teaming with the Light..

Trying to stand straight

Weakening of my knees (As the)

Trembling brings some Trees..

Bringing it ..bringing it ..bringing it down..

Bringing it ..bringing it..bringing it down..(The Earth is)

Bringing it ..bringing it..bringing it down..

Bringing it…bringing it..bringing it down..

—————–

Running for my Life

Jumping in Strife

Thrusting out my Chest (I am)

Giving up with no Protest..

Searching for one Life

Looking at the Dead..

Losing all my Hopes (Will I be)

Tossing all my ropes?

Mangling of a steel hive

Pulling out none alive..

Staying up ..Staying up ..Staying up ..high..(We all)

Staying up ..staying up..staying up..high!!

Staying up ..staying up..staying up..high!!

K Force

Sometimes things happen unplanned. This was one of those instances. Started working on a very different idea but ended up completing this. Thoroughly enjoyed doing this..My new year starts off in a classical manner – musically speaking

PS: After I posted this and started listening to it multiple times, I realized how much I have been influenced by one man’s music..and how much his work has captivated my musical thoughts & my limited and questionable musical creativity (unknowingly sometimes like this song)..

So, it is only natural I dedicate this song to AR Rahman on his birthday today (Jan-6). Happy Birthday AR!

Orchestral Melee

Having a deadline helps. I vouch for this to be true always when it comes to tasks related to my professional life. When it comes to tasks in my day to day personal life, I would say, the above is true most of the times. But very rarely, my brain is at its best and delivers more than expected under a deadline, when it comes to creative tasks. I do believe creativity should not be curtailed by any time limits and should be left to expand or grow till it hits a block. This, is true in my opinion in all form of creative arts.

Which is why, this composition titled “Orchestral melee”, in spite of it being a very short piece, gives me immense satisfaction listening to it almost 2 years after it was composed (conceptualization to final mastering) literally in less than an hour, because of a deadline I had to work under. I consider this a rare phenomenon given my limited experience. But, of course, you have every right not to like it..Do post your comments.

Pallapatti

This was a song I composed at least 4 years ago..and the tools I used at that time were less sophisticated than what I have now. But I still consider this as one my favorites. May be because of the lyrics..Yes. The song is  based of a few of verses from Kavignar Vairamuthu’s poem titled “India Vivasaaya Naadu” (இந்தியா விவசாய நாடு) which belongs to the collection “Konjam Thaeneer Niraiya Vaanam” (கொஞ்சம் தேநீர் நிறைய வானம்).

Jilu Jilu

Needless to say, I was inspired to do a reggae based song after I listened to Couples Retreat.

I enjoyed doing this no. Your comments are welcome.

PS: Some trivia on the making of the song can be found here.
