Ego and Age

I am not an AB hater..I just find him to be so diplomatic that his hypocrisy is obvious even to his well wishers. If you followed his recent rant on why he declined to accept the honorary doctorate degree offered by the Queensland University of Technology, then you will understand why I want to ask him a very simple question – “How do you define racism?”. Because, if he really cared about Indian students getting killed or getting humiliated and being served injustice, then there have been quite a few incidents in the past, where he could have taken a strong stand – No I am not talking about incidents outside India. I am referring to decades of violence leashed out to Indian students in India. What has Mr. Big B been doing all these years?  He could have stayed quiet. I would have had no problems or would have had no specific reason to highlight his hypocrisy. But, these are difficult times for everyone – Even to Mr. Big B – who is desperately craving to feed his insatiable ego, which incidentally keeps inflating with his age.

Enough about ego and age. Or may be not. Did ego bring down Dhoni at the T20 world cup? From being the media loved captain, MSD suddenly has become a questionable captain. No, I won’t question him. T20 is a very unpredictable format and there is no easy way to define a true champion because there has not been one team that has been consistent in this format for more than a couple of months. I am not disappointed that India got their backs kicked by England..I am sure, this tournament will be forgotten soon.

Who can forget No. 14 from Roger? He may owe some of his success to Soderling for keeping Nadal in a Spanish island. But, the moment was magical – To see him accept the honor from Agassi brought me goose bumps. Grand Slams are such dignified events – Compare them to the NBA final (which just ended and Lakers have won) or an NFL final – They are world apart and no wonder why games like Tennis will never be popular here. Federer let his emotions out and why not? It is not everyday you get to do what he did on that day at Roland Garros!  Soderling was amazingly humble and fell short of falling at Federer’s feet. Federer was ever gracious and dignified. Age has not altered his Ego. At least, not yet!

The perils of Pessimism…

When a country whose confidence is at an all time low, everything can easily be looked at negatively even if there is not much rationale behind looking at it that way. I have always wondered why would we want to throw in so much of pessimism around yourself when you know it is not necessarily going to help. We all understand the reality and we all know that things are definitely at its 25 year worst in the US and hence possibly in most countries around the world. But, to sulk is not going to get anyone anywhere. And, that I believe is exactly what President Obama is trying to do. Today is the 47th day since he took over office and it is extremely funny to look around the country to see how many different ways he is being targeted for what he is trying to do. As biased as I am towards his pragmatist approach, it is hard not to notice what he is trying to do. In my 11 years in this country, I have not seen a President work so actively, keep pushing his tasks to his cabinet so regularly and above all to have touched upon so many issues administratively in such a ridiculously short time.

While we have Limbaugh suddenly being elevated to the pedestal of acting as the Conservative Hero, Steele is trying for a hip-hop cameo and Jindal, from being the most intelligent elected official has gotten thrown to play the role of a humiliated Comedian, in the latest show called “RNC in Distress”. Of course, Palin is still trying hard to stay in limelight. In any case, what the party has proved in 47 days is that they are not going to sacrifice their ego for making things happen. And what they have to realize is that, their distress is only adding to the pessimistic mood in the country.
Overall, this kind of pessimism is only digging the perils of this economy deeper.
It is another Saturday and the weather could have been better. The thought that we may actually be towards the end of winter is warm enough, even though it is 40 degrees outside. A very hectic month ahead and I cannot complain! I want to make sure that I don’t contribute to any pessimism, to or for the people around me.

Elevating one’s game

As I sit down quietly absorbing Bruce Springsteen sweat his way out of the NYC crowd during a 2005 concert, I decided to quickly reflect upon some game changers from this week.

1) Got to give it to the Republicans for sticking to their guns. No amount of bipartisan efforts from the new president was going to get them out of their conservative cocoon. The Stimulus package is definitely not an attempt to murder Capitalism but what they should understand now is that to get out of this disaster called Recession, there has to be concession and not some blind-folded – mantra chanting..! If I had a choice, I would shut down all radio stations broadcasting RL. Yes. The guy on dope…and who drips venom when he talks.

2) Still sticking to RNC, to quote one of my friends, “they have elevated the game” by selecting an African American chairman. I don’t much follow that party even though I keep in touch with the times. But I had not heard of this Lt. Gov. till the other night. I was laughing..Do they really think this is going to prevent the marginalization of the party? Specially, when a guy who thinks “bipartisanship is overrated”!

3) Superbowl tomorrow and I am one of the rare breeds in the country who give two hoots for the game. If at all anything, the NFL games are entertainment and that’s how they are marketed to the audience. I feel sad for those who think that American Football is a real “sport”…No offence, my football loving friends! Apparently, there is a chicken wing shortage in the country for this weekend..and that brought me a chuckle too. You know where I am going with this.

4) Australian Open at the Rod Laver arena – Quite didn’t follow the tournament as much as I would have liked to. Specially the epic Semifinal between Rafa and Fernando. I truly hope for Roger to make the climb this Sunday and equal Pete Sampras. He deserves it.

5) Cricket – Aren’t Dhoni’s men suddenly beginning to look a little clinical? Still nowhere close to how the Ozzies were till a year ago. But, consistency is some quality that they can get closer to inheriting. Talking about the Ozzies, just like the American economic dominance in the world is beginning to come down largely due to their arrogance, it is now time for the Australian Cricket dominance to start coming down for the very same reason. Great job SA!

I need to elevate my own game too. Did I tell you about the short movie I made for my company? It was great fun and has given me some confidence in taking the next step towards realizing one of my dreams. The movie is available in my company’s blog.

Congrats Vishy!

As the sports fans in India rejoice the thumping win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium which has sealed the series for Dhoni’s men (What an amazing run of form Dhoni is having as a captain – I am yet to believe it is because of any special captaincy techniques he has brought to the field), I would like to take a moment and congratulate Vishwanathan Anand! It is no ordinary feat – If Tiger Woods is to be credited for turning so many young African American people to a sport, they had ignored till then and if Serena Williama and Venus Williams can be credited for bringing Tennis to the mainstream African American population, then Vishy absolutely gets the credit for making Indian youngsters believe that becoming a Grand Master is well within most of our reach. Look at the number of GMs we have produced since Anand first became a GM.

The kind of reception he was accorded with, at the Chennai airport a few days back was well deserving – but unlike Cricketers, Vishy is not going to have fans wearing “I am the World Champion” T-shirt with his face imprinted on them or “King of 64″ T-shirts to show their adulation and follow him around.

In any case, whatever he has achieved during most of his career is entirely due to his hard work (with nothing in return from the government) – I am glad he was able to afford it..and thankfully, he has had a good record so far to be able to do so.

Congrats Anand!

The Master and (the) Traitor

When the blue USTA courts in Flushing Meadows were being dried Monday morning, I am sure the officials were a little concerned if the breezy morning would end up wet, thus spoiling the crowd from getting into the Arthur Ashe stadium. But the crowd got in alright that evening and was truly mesmerized by one man – The Master of this amazing game called tennis – in the last 30 years or so.

I have been fanatical about my tennis heroes, as long as I have followed the game – the first time I was so passionate about a player, it was for Boris Becker – the white ‘eye-browed’ Aryan from Germany. I may have been infatuated by his unconventional style of sheer athleticism and on-court boyish antics. And when he conquered the strawberry-cream eating British fans’ hearts, he was just 17. There have been many other players that I have followed over the years, liked and wanted to win. Connors, Edberg, Wilander, Sampras, Agassi after the comeback, Pat Cash for the first few years, etc. on the men’s side. But after Becker, I feel the same fanaticism for the Master now. While on the women’s side, Steffi Graf has been my only passionate tennis queen – although Chris Evert, Seles after her comeback, Sanchez, Sharapova, Early Venus Williams, etc. have ignited my dreams of being out there and following the games & championship tournaments.

So, when Andy Murray’s girl friend, Kim Sears (pretty good looking I should say), took seats with his mom and his whole entourage (funnily his favorite TV show is Entourage), they would not have expected the “Roasted” feast that the Master would serve to their man. What a match it was !! Should I say, what an one-sided match it was! I was actually beginning to get a little concerned when the Master started fumbling on his forehand shots a little bit towards the end of the second set and again during the middle of the third set (after getting a 4-0 lead). I was worried because those were moments where flashes of his more humanly game in 2008 kept flickering in front my eyes and those were moments when the aura of invincibility that once haloed the man, looked punctured. But in the end, he won in a very human way – by throwing so many unforced errors, not the same kind of aces that he had in the semis and doing less serve&volleys than he would have liked to. I was relieved that he got his No. 13 and sure he is not going to stop there.

Watched “Traitor” over the weekend. As much as I liked the movie, it gave me a very Dejavu feel – seems like movies in this genre are the “in thing”..Of course, movies are reflection of our times and sure enough middle east setting, Islamic terrorism, Spy, CIA, etc..are all very Dejavu. But overall, full marks to Don and Guy..Amazing job! Don Cheadle has come a long way and he can pull off different shades of characters rather comfortably.

Palin, Taxi and Nadal

It is one of those times of the year, specially in this digital news era, where constant bombardment of the same news from different perspectives is almost inevitable, I seldom get any ideas to post here other than American Presidential Politics. The Republican convention is under way and it is enough to say that it keeps my blood boiling. Truly, in all honesty, the Republicans – the all White, Gun Toting, Christian party is full of B**S** are resorting to the slam-bam method because it works invariably. Who the loose-end is Palin? Two weeks ago, 95% of the country had not heard of her and suddenly she is the toast of the Evangelics. Funny an says a lot about the bottom scrapping politics that McCain is playing. No one in the right mind – Read it as No woman in her right mind will think Palin is going to do any good for this country’s women. All she can do is cook you some Moose Steaks, Take your kids to hockey games and shoot a few games with you on your weekend get-away with her. Other than that..???

Thanks to my son, Taxi Taxi is playing non-stop in my car and everyone in the family is hooked on to it now. Amazing how the song was conceptualized and made so catchy. That’s where lies the difference between being a genius and being a wannabe.

US Open Tennis is underway and I really hope Federer gets this crown. I admire Nadal’s power tennis – but would rather prefer Federer’s elegance and style over powerful display of machine like tennis. Nadal may be having a great year but to stay long in this game and win many grand slams, power alone does not do much. That’s just my opinion.

Enuff already..Time to get back to work..!

A Gold in 112 years

Congrats Abhinav Bindra!

Certainly a proud moment..and I cannot believe we had to wait 112 years to get there…

Citius, Altius, Fortius – Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni

It’s here – The 29th Olympiad in Beijing. After all the hype and hoopla that clouded the event till now, the event has promised to be interesting – if not for anything, just for the curiosity factor “Can China do it?”. I mean, I don’t propose the world boycott the games because of China’s Human Rights Violation – but I am against IOC for granting China the games to begin with. Which country wouldn’t want to host Olympics, if given a chance..for Achilles’ sake?
In any case, I hope all the anti-pollution laws and artificial rain attempts with silver iodide pellets help the air stay cleaner than how it was earlier.

Looking forward to the next 2 weeks – Other than the track & field events, I am going to root for Phelps.

Scotch, Tennis and Humidity

Clearly none of the above three is related to any other. But they summarize my stay in Atlanta so far. I am glad that I got a break and I made it to Atlanta for a family get together. Amidst the chaotic kitchen melee with the constant clinkering of urns that keep churning out either oily mirchi bajjis or sambar that continued to feed a party of 12, some of us indulged in good tennis (well good only because of the workout – but really bad in terms of the quality of my game) on a humid Saturday morning followed by Glenlivet and Lage Raho Munnabhai. A great way to unwind during a short weekend like this. In my case, a way to compensate for 4 days of travel this week alone.

Disgruntled at the Center Court

I was one of the 5 in the room who was peevish with the grunts that came from the other side of the court. In general, we were finding flaws with anything and everything that Rafa did and didn’t that day. Including his grunts. How annoying they were..To me at least. I can’t imagine being Roger, trying to match Borg’s feat and here is my opponent questioning every sixth or seventh shot of mine – thanks to the hawk-eye replay, now exclusively available at Wimbledon, with the most irksome grunts that were made every time the guy hits a powerful winner across the court, giving me very little chance to chase it down.

I couldn’t have been Roger and none could have been on that day – for it was a miracle he pulled it off in the end. The mental game was lost in Roger’s mind during the first 3 sets. But once he repaired his thoughts, we got to see Federer’s best tennis and Rafa’s was no match once Roger brought his ammunition out.

We celebrated the final foreground smash as much as Roger’s family did in the box, with high-fives and cheers..and the emotions were running high in my sister-in-law’s living room. We had been talking about this for such a long time that we actually were motivated to go play tennis on a Sunday morning at 6:30 AM. When we came back, Roger was up by one set & the rest as they history as we were glued on to the TV set till ‘history’ was made.

Cheers Roger!
