The Real Nothingness…

Not so surprisingly, a major event in my personal life had kept me away from sharing my highly irreverent and irrelevant thoughts on highly critical global issues. However, what surprised me the most was even the ongoing political season seemed to have no impact in generating my blogging instincts and seemed to add very little or absolutely no flavor into my blogging soup. Yes, it was a major distraction and all my energy was focused on getting the newly adopted daughter bond well with us personally and with the environment. It is an ongoing process. However, the honest confession is that I wasn’t prepared for this amount of distraction. All good.

This post is dedicated to the real nothingness of the Republican campaign. While I start typing this I learned that President Obama finally shared his views on same-sex marriage and that he is in favor of it. Yay. 3 years late in coming out to support this. But in my mind, it is never too late as far as this issue goes. With that said, this topic may be a different post all together.

Ha! Now, The real nothingness…

Isn’t it really boring? I mean this GOP campaign? It is almost like a rerun of John Kerry of the 2004 election.

You have nothing to hate in him except his politics. Yet, he will never be in your best friends list. Romney (coincidentally also from Massachusetts) is everything that a party can offer if it wants to offer nothing. He represents nothing. He is full of gas. He says one thing one day and says the exact opposite thing the next day or a few weeks later. He wants you to like him. He actually tries too hard to make you like him and in the process thinks that he is saying things that you like but actually he doesn’t even know what he likes. Because his only goal in life seems to be “to be accepted”. So he chugs along. He keeps making things up to make you like him. He tries switching positions on issues so that someone could like him. He doesn’t want to admit that he has nothing to offer except his wealthy & boorish background and of course a vault full of Cayman island transaction receipts.

Poor fellow !(not in literal sense – that would be a total oxymoron). I hope he finds something to cling onto. Definitely not something like his latest claim that he should take credit for the auto bailout. I mean, c’mon! Who buys that? Ok. May be the party of gas could buy that. But seriously…

Romney taking credit for the auto bailout is like the Pilgrims taking credit for the Indian Reservations of today.

What next? He is going to take credit for President Obama being born in the United States and for the stain on Monica Lewinsky’s satin blue dress.??(sorry that doesn’t make sense..But that’s exactly the point).

So in pursuit offering everything for this campaign by putting all their eggs into one campaign basket called “Obama-Hatred”, the GOP has found the perfect nothingness for this campaign.

And who else can represent real nothingness better than Romney?

Divided

There is no better illusion than believing that the whole “country has never been more divided than in the last 4 years”. I hear this rhetoric from both sides. The country has always been divided along political/ideological lines. But then, people always found ways to work around that division in a civilized manner…At least till 2008.

But unfortunately, It took someone like Obama to bring out the real hatred from one side of the political spectrum which till then was masking that hatred under a superficial layer of civility. It took someone like Obama to unite all those likeminded haters in the last 4 years to shed that mask and create what we now see as this emotionally charged climate across ideologies.

It is sad not because there are some people out there who feel that ‘the country has never been more divided’, but it is sad because that there is so much hatred still out there, possibly reminding us that progress and civility, after all, may actually have been an illusionary bubble we had chosen to live inside, till Obama became the President.

To believe Romney or whoever else will be able to unite the country is simply an act of either fooling ourselves or blowing ourselves anther illusionary bubble to get into.

And the Oscar went…..

…clearly to a person who deserved it more than everyone else in that category. Right? No, as most would claim.

Guess that is the irony of any movie award show. Everyone knows that it is highly irrational to be objective about an art form because art in itself is so subjective. Yet, year after year, glitz after glamor, actor after actor, they clamor to the Kodak theater.

So they did last night too.

For weeks, I had been cajoling my whole family to go watch “The Hugo” in theaters with me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t convince them and now I am reduced to watching it in my home theater. Finally, I will have a good reason to put that 3D TV to use. I am not that disappointed that I didn’t get to watch ‘The Artist’ in theaters. I am sure I would enjoy it but then I wouldn’t probably think of it as Oscar worthy. Remember it is all subjective?

While at the topic, see a pattern here – An Englishman (ok..King) who struggled with his speech won an Oscar last year and a French man who didn’t speak at all won it this year. Makes me wonder if it would be a German who doesn’t have a tongue who would win it next year!

By the way, Billy Crystal is the kind of Oscar host you could get for minimum guarantee. He is not going to ruin it for you. He is not going to create controversies for you. He is not going to Gervais it for you. So, what we got yesterday when compared to the previous year was definitely better. But would the academy ever dare inviting Ricky Gervais to host the show? Probably Never.

There were some refreshing changes last night in the format. The main one being around musical performances. With the academy struggling to find even 5 suitable nominees for the Original Song category, it was only expected that they do something different. I was pleasantly surprised to see AR Rahman having a part to play along with the legendary Zimmer.

Finally, Angelina’s leg stunt was overshadowed by how skeleton like she looked. And yes, the JLo – Diaz stunt was funny and worth it. But Cohen took it too far and he lost a few fans.
