Never mind I am sitting in a nation where football is really not football and where soccer is not football and football is soccer and football (soccer) is for children under 12 or for girls.
I am trying to catch the greatest competitive sports circus on this planet through internet and television, comfortably stretched out in my couch.
My predictions have come true in 3 out of the 4 games that have been played till now – yes, I am playing in a pool. I gave too much credit to Poland in their game against Ecuador but I am happy with the other 3 games.
Following the world cup has become a little easier in the USA this time. My memory, when stretched, goes back to 1994 for any last vivid moments of following the tournament amidst people who shared similar enthusiasm. Clearly the last two world cups cause a blur when I try to remember..I am pretty sure it is because of the damp reception this country gives to the sport. Strangely, the 1994 world cup was hosted by the US.
And may be the 1990 worl cup ranks no. 1 in my memory as far as sheer addiction goes. The commentator going …it’s ….”S..chi…ll…a..ci…iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii”….will always ring in my ears. The 1990 final definitely had an anti-climatic finish – my then football idol Maradona in an awful form notwithstanding some horrible umpiring decisions.
1986 is as far as I can go with real and defined memories of the tournament. God’s hand helped Diego Maradona clinch the crown for Argentina but there were a lot of thrillers in the tournament. This time around though, I don’t have any real favorites. Rooney, Owen and Ronaldhino top my list of players to follow and hence I want to say Brazil and England are my top two picks for the cup (although I know England’s chances are as fat as slim). The “socca warriors” may end up being my favorite under dog team of this tournament, specially after their spirited sprite of a game against the Swedes today.
With all the hoopla around the game, I am actually back at warming up my spikes for some real kicking myself. As long as this fun lasts, I will be another spiked up football junkie but fully cognizant of the crazy world around me.
